Day 2- Rosswood Plantation to Rocky Springs Campground. -33 miles

REALLY, IS THIS THE ONLY PLACE YOU CAN WRITE?

I must say that to stay at this grand plantation home after our first day's ride was a brilliant move. The beds were heaven and to have a hot shower, so relaxing. Today started with coffee on the veranda while we waited for breakfast. We were told by Mrs Hylander that Peggy, the cook, was one of the finest around. We couldn't wait. The doors to the grand dining room were opened and we were seated at the table set with fine Limoges china and sterling silver flatware and serving pieces. The first course consisted of fresh fruit and Peggy's famous homemade biscuits with butter and jams. Following this she directed us to the sideboard and lifted the silver covers off of bacon and sausage, omelets with onions and peppers, a most delectable creamy, cheesy, hash brown casserole, and broiled peaches with a crunchy brown sugar topping. All this served up with more piping hot coffee with cream and orange juice. Yum! After thanking our hosts we loaded up and headed the 5 miles back to the Parkway.

This day dawned much cooler than the previous and the overnight rainstorm seemed to make the greens of the trees and grass even more brilliant. But along with the front came a brisk north wind. A head wind. Not a good thing.  Drafting became the theme of the day. All we could do was put our heads down, follow as closely to one another as we could and pedal into the wind. At least it wasn't hot. A big thank you to Mitch for taking the lead position for the majority of the day. Exhausting.

We stopped at several sites today taking those opportunities to stretch and rest. We walked down into a section of the Sunken Old Trace, saw Mangum Mound (an Indian mound) and walked amongst the tombstones of a mid 1800's cemetery back in the woods near the ruins of an inn along the Old Trace.

We reached the campgrounds and found that it was quickly filling up, most likely due to the holiday weekend. Glad we got here when we did.  James commented that his butt felt like a triangle and his feet were flat. We all felt that way. It was time to relax, but first camp had to be setup. We accomplished this in fairly short order and Charlotte vigorously defended our camp area from would be squatters with noisy motor homes with generators. We do not want to listen to that all night.

Following dinner of freeze dried gourmet in a bag brought back to life, it was time to write the blog. Dead phones. No problem. We'll walk to the front "office" and charge them. Who knew that all the plugs would be disconnected, and why? But James found one they missed. In the men's restroom. So that is where I wrote this entry, in between men stopping in and with one cocking his head asking me "The men's room. Really, is this the only place you can write?" As a matter of fact it is.

It was Another Great Day.

    1. Hi Suzie! Thanks for following our adventure! Charlotte and I are each carrying between 25 and 28 lbs. James and Mitch are carrying around 45 lbs each. Could be a little more than that since we found a Walmart and got more food. :)
